I would just like to ...thank everyone who attended LAM's recent live performances in Europe on the "Un-American Tour" (a title referencing both my critique of the United States of America's actions in the world and disgust with many of my fellow citizens for being tolerant/blind/supportive of those actions, and the obvious fact that these concerts weren't in the USA
, just elaborating since a few people have asked).
Anyway, I'm sitting here in my hotel in London just reflecting back on the past two weeks, a relatively short tour, but still pretty hectic, with LAM performing each day in a different country. Being a vegan, food was impossible to come by, so I lost at least 10 pounds, and the schedule was a killer (late nights, early mornings to the airport, no sleep at all). It seemed that Donald Rumsfeld (Bush former torture/war czar) always has a hand in booking LAM's tours. But it was cool, nonetheless.
LAM toured to a few countries I'd never been to before- Russia, Finland, etc. All the shows were memorable and all the people were fantastic. But here are some highlights...
Russia- I would never have thought that any crowd could top the audiences from Mexico City for sheer enthusiasm, volume, passion, etc, but Russia did. They had over 1,000 tickets sold in advance and many more the day of the show. That was a pretty out-of-control show. The crowd was very enthusiastic, to say the least. I hope to have some video and photos up soon. Unfortunately I wasn't able to go out into the venue after LAM's performance because security said my presence would cause too much commotion. They came to this conclusion when I tried to step out the backstage area where people were waiting and it got a bit chaotic, with security eventually forcefully pushing back the fans. I was torn on what to do because I actually had some friends I wanted to meet up with and wanted to also greet the cool LAM supporters there, but also didn't want to subject them to the security guard's wrath. But it was all moot when they told me it was just impossible to leave the backstage area. Hopefully next time an official "meet and greet" can be arranged. Thanks to all of you, you're amazing. We're waiting to come back, so make sure you let your promoters know you want LAM again.
Finland- the show here was also great. After a few shows I wasn't so happy with (due to damage done to some expensive equipment by the airlines which fucked up LAM's video/audio synch, creating the problems with the first couple of concerts) this was a nice surprise. The performance went smoothly, and a huge crowd awaited LAM and meeting the fans after was intense. I have some video of that somewhere among my tapes. But the crowd was made up of truly nice and friendly people and I'd love to go back to Helsinki soon.
Poland- another really enjoyable show with many great people in the audience. Lots of fun.
Athens Greece- great audience, a large crowd. Really enjoyable.
Saturday night's show in London, the final of the European tour, was one of the best as well. Sadly we had to cut a couple of songs from the set to fit in the allotted time block, because the club had a strict curfew so they could open a dance club after - something all live venues in London seem to do. After the show and after LAM's crowd left, as we were loading our gear out to our taxi we heard the music being played - they were actually playing Axel F from Beverly Hills Cop. And the 10 people who showed up for that club were dancing to it. I'm glad we left.
Anyway- the audience at the London LAM show was quite large, was passionate, involved and welcoming after LAM's long absence from this city. The after-party at Slimelight was really interesting too- so many people mentioned the video projections I edited together for the concerts and many favorably commented on the political, animal rights, and social aspects of LAM (and me). I'm glad people do care about these aspects. That's really the only reason I can be in a performing band- because I don't crave attention or desire any amount of "celebrity" status, as minor as it may be, that comes with being in a band. Just creating art and bringing attention to things that are important to me is the only reason to carry on. Though meeting LAM supporters is always great because they are the nicest people in the world. Seriously. You guys kick ass.
All the other shows had great audiences too and we were honored by the audiences who attended. I'm just too tired to go through the entire list now. After my return to Los Angeles this week I think I will sleep for a week.
I'm very proud to work with a bunch of great guys who now play with me in LAM- So Randy, Pete, and Matthew, thanks for everything. I had a great time with you guys. And a special thanks to Rosi, LAM's thoughtful and reserved and ever-patient sound man, who is based in Germany.
A few pictures below (these were either emailed to me or linked in the LAM Community), more coming soon. Thanks again to everyone. We miss you all already. Now, is there anyone who can help guide me around London today!?
And, see you in Mexico City on November 22nd...
